The Itinerary
Day 1, Sunday 16 October: Home / Batemans Bay Dinner
We pick you up this morning from your home and begin our journey to the bustling coastal town of Batemans Bay located on the estuary of the Clyde River in southern New South Wales. We enjoy some free time to purchase lunch in Berry and to explore the shops before continuing south to Huskisson situated on the shores of beautiful Jervis Bay. Here we visit the Lady Denman Maritime Museum which concentrates on the history of Jervis Bay and district, including early exploration, the timber industry, Aboriginal history, early settlement, lighthouse history, shipwrecks, coastal shipping, whaling history and Naval base history. We will also get the chance to go on a guided tour with a local Aboriginal. The Complex also features the Jervis Bay Gallery of Science and the Sea which contains a collection of diverse treasures, a Surveyor’s Gallery displaying a worldstandard collection of surveying instruments, a Local History Gallery and a wide range of interesting objects connected with the history of this area on Jervis Bay. The Mangrove Boardwalk takes visitors through the mangroves on a raised walkway out to the margins of Currambene Creek, offering the opportunity to gain an understanding of wetlands, mangrove swamps and the interaction between ocean and land environments. Later in the afternoon we make our way to Batemans Bay to check into our accommodation. This evening we enjoy dinner in the motel restaurant. Overnight Batemans Bay
Day 2, Monday 17 October: Batemans Bay Breakfast, Lunch, A/Tea & Dinner
This morning we are joined by our local guide who will step on our coach and provide us with an introductory tour to Batemans Bay and the surrounding area enjoying a cuppa from the coach in a scenic setting. We then make our way to the famous Innes Boatshed where we board our Merinda River Cruise for a three hour cruise up the beautiful Clyde River – one of the most scenic waterways in Australia. We enjoy scrumptious fish and chips on board from the Boatshed as we cruise north to the picturesque Nelligen where we relish a 30 minute stopover to explore. Tea, coffee and biscuits are also included. We arrive back in Batemans Bay early afternoon and make our way to the Batemans Bay Old Courthouse Museum. Forming an historic precinct adjacent to the town’s Water Gardens, collection themes at the Museum include costume, education, healthcare, domestic life, forestry and timber tales as well as crime and punishment. Our local guide from the Clyde River and Batemans Bay Historical Society provides us with insight into the area’s history as we browse through an array of period costumes, dolls, antique machinery and tools, rural technology and much more! Later we return to our motel for a wonderful 3-course dinner. Overnight Batemans Bay
Day 3, Tuesday 18 October: Mogo Breakfast, Lunch, A/Tea & Dinner
This morning we travel to Mogo to visit the Original Gold Rush Colony, an authentically recreated, Australian 1850’s Gold Rush era village, located behind the regional township of Mogo. The old pioneer village theme park is set on 13 acres of native Australian bushland, bounded on 3 sides by the Mogo State Forest and sits sympathetically mindful of nature and the environment. All the buildings, including the administration and on-site accommodation harmonise with the theme of the 1850s Australian gold rush days. The change from the 21st century begins as soon as you cross the path to the machinery and printing shed which stores engines from early last century. Cross the time-warp bridge and find yourself in a bygone world of little timber and stone buildings – a replica Goldfields village. After an exciting morning we enjoy a light lunch at the Gold Rush Colony soaking in the ambiance of the attractions around us.
This afternoon we visit Mogo Zoo, an organisation committed to the survival of endangered animals and actively involved in many global breeding programs. We are joined by our zoo guide who will tour us through some of the many enclosures to meet the animals. We will also have the opportunity to listen to informative talks providing us with insight into their personalities and natural behaviours. Later we enjoy afternoon tea at the zoo before returning to our motel. Dinner tonight is in the motel restaurant. Overnight Batemans Bay
Day 4, Wednesday 19 October: Tilba Tilba Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Today we visit historic Tilba Tilba, a National Trust village. We enjoy free time in Tilba Tilba to explore the many shops of yesteryear. We then pay a visit to the ABC Cheese Factory which features both cheese making and milk bottling viewable through large glass windows. We also enjoy cheese and honey tastings and browse the wide range of condiments, conserves and quality gift items available for purchase. We might even be tempted to try a milkshake made from their own Tilba Milk – straight from their Jersey herd to us! A short drive follows into the lush green rolling hills of the Tilba countryside. We alight in the vineyard setting of Tilba Valley Wines for a hearty Ploughman’s Lunch and wine tasting. The beauty continues when we drive to the southern side of Tilba Tilba as we take a stroll through the 3 ½ acre gardens at Foxglove Spire Gardens – a 100 year old cottage. (The gardens themselves were voted one of Australia‘s best by Bourke’s Backyard). Later this afternoon we return to our motel in Batemans Bay for dinner. Overnight Batemans Bay
Day 5, Thursday 20 October: Batemans Bay / Home Breakfast & Lunch
This morning we bid our hosts farewell and begin our journey back home. We enjoy a stop for morning tea before travelling on to Wollongong stopping in at the Nan Tien Temple for a tour. The Temple is the largest Buddhist Temple in the Southern Hemisphere and the second largest in the world costing 50 million dollars to build. Leaving the temple we enjoy lunch before continuing on north arriving back home to say farewell at your doorstep after a wonderful time in Batemans Bay with Mary & Brian.
